Carbon Storage

The design of improved materials and reservoir systems for carbon capture utilization, storage (CCS, CCUS) and carbon sequestration is key to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint of fossil fuels. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) characterises carbon dioxide (CO2) injection, binding and trapping properties for long-term storage in rocks and other materials.

Our GeoSpec systems determine the porosity, permeability, and pore size distribution of rocks to ascertain how injected carbon dioxide will react with the reservoir rock matrix, cap rocks and other fluids present in reservoir systems. Exploiting well established Time Domain NMR (TD-NMR) methods, they are widely used across the oil and gas industry and in related academic research. Measurements are typically conducted on rock core samples taken from drilled wells often under high pressure reservoir conditions.
